Your Path to Becoming a Professional Inboard Hydroplane Race

Becoming a professional racer might be more achievable than you think. The world of Inboard Hydroplane racing is welcoming, supportive, and surprisingly affordable. We’re a tight-knit community that’s here to guide you every step of the way.

Getting Started: A Simple 3-Step Process:

Step 1: Join the Racing Community

Start by becoming a member of the American Power Boat Association (APBA) and a local racing club – Marine Prop Riders (MPR).

  • Monthly Meetings: Connect with fellow racers at our monthly gatherings, held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

📍 National Coney Island: 30140 Van Dyke Avenue, Warren, MI 48093

  • How to Join: Download and complete the MPR Membership Form from our [Resources Page], then mail it in to get started.

Step 2: Safety First – Pass the Physical & Dunk Test

Before hitting the water, you’ll need:

1. Medical Clearance

Submit a physical examination report from your doctor confirming you are fit to race.

2. Dunk Test Certification

This test simulates an emergency escape from a capsized hydroplane. Trained divers will assist you as you're secured in a mock cockpit at the edge of a pool and then flipped upside down.

Your task is to:

• Remove the steering wheel

• Release your safety harness

• Exit the cockpit

• Swim to the surface

The purpose of this test is to ensure you can remain calm under pressure and follow safety procedures precisely.

Step 3: Gain Experience & Get Certified

Once you’ve passed the dunk test, you’re ready to pilot an inboard hydroplane at an APBA event.

  • Beginner Support: You’ll receive guidance from the event referee and may start with solo test laps.

  • Official Certification: When the referee determines you’re ready, they’ll sign off on your form—making you an officially certified racer.

Ready to Race?

Join us and take the first step toward an adrenaline-filled journey on the water. Whether you're chasing a lifelong dream or just discovering the sport, we’re here to help you make it happen.
